It was announced at FanExpo Canada that Geoff Johns and David Finch will be launching a new Jutice League of America title. Team members include Stargirl, Hawkman, Martian Manhunter, Steve Trevor, Katana, Catwoman, Green Arrow, Vibe, and the newest Green Lantern, Baz. In an interview with MTV Geek Geoff Johns discussed his reasoning for this teams line up.

GJ: We talked about characters that were League members, like Green Arrow and Hawkman that felt like they belonged… Characters that were unexpected, like Vibe and Catwoman. Obviously, Martian Manhunter is a big piece of it, and we hinted about this team back in Justice League #8, both with Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter, and Steve Trevor. And Katana was a new character. Stargirl is coming back, obviously a character that I have a huge affinity for. And then the new Green Lantern.

Geoff went on to talk about this revamped Stargirl, Pat Dugan and a Starman.

Geek: Let’s talk about the characters a bit… I think I was the most excited to see Stargirl coming back, and you writing her again. What’s the take on her? Is this the same Courtney Whitmore we know and love?
GJ: Yeah, it is! She’s slightly different… She is the opposite of Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Bynes. She is this real, All-American, wholesome superhero from Hollywood that is a phenomenon out in Los Angeles. She got her start on Hollywood Boulevard, she is incredibly altruistic, and idealistic. She is probably the one hero that goes against everything that the Paris Hilton generation is. That’s where she comes from, so she brings a different voice, a different perspective to the team.
She’s younger, probably seventeen or eighteen years old. She’s very exuberant, positive, optimistic… You’ll learn a little bit more about her background and why she became Stargirl, and how she’s connected to another superhero named Starman… Pat Duggan will be in there. It’s very true to the original origins of Stargirl, but I think she’s even more relevant now. And I love that if she has an article on TMZ? It’s only positive.
Geek: On the other end of the spectrum, the character I was most surprised to see in there was Catwoman. How does she end up in the mix?
GJ: Catwoman is a very different perspective, and is brought in for a very different reason. She stays because they have something that she wants… And it’s not at all what you’d expect. It’s not a big diamond, it’s not a get out of jail free card, it’s something she’s been searching for that’s going to lead to a whole exploration of a side of Selina Kyle we haven’t yet seen.
But she is going to have a lot of fun on the team, she is going to be the Veronica to Stargirl’s Betty, if you will, and she has a new dynamic because we haven’t really seen her interact much with all these characters. Some of them not at all, like Vibe, and Stargirl… There’s not a lot of interaction between her and Martian Manhunter, and I don’t think she’s ever interacted with Steve Trevor that I can remember. Catwoman has a very different reason for being on the team.

I really wonder if this is a new Starman or if he is referring to Mikaal Thomas that was seen in The Shade #1. Getting back into the nature of the team Geoff compared it to writing the JSA.

GJ: It’s funny, the book feels very much like JSA, because there’s a lot of character interaction, a lot of characters that aren’t necessarily the A-List, which is always really fun to work with… I love working with non A-List characters. And having David draw those, they become A-List. So if you look at David’s art, and this has influenced the book tremendously, he has this great power to his figures, this very great superhero art…
But if you look at The Dark Knight, he also has these fantastic emotions, and getting emotion out of the characters, really seeing these characters on a journey together; the book is going to have a tone that is JSA, the original Ostrander Suicide Squad, which was very character driven, and again utilized characters we don’t necessarily see together a lot. Those are the two biggest influences on where the book is going.

He also said a bit about Hawkman:

Seeing the new Green Lantern with Green Arrow, and revisiting that relationship with Green Arrow and Hawkman, because we think we know it, we think they’re always at odds… And we want to turn it on its head a little bit, and delve into it more, and see what makes those two characters tick, to find out there’s something in common they both have despite their differences.

Well this sounds like a book that any fan of Stargirl, Hawkman, or Geoff’s run on JSA would enjoy.
How do you feel about Stargirl being on the main earth and not Earth 2? Do you think we’ll see a new Starman or will it be Mikaal?

Rob Liefeld Leaves The Savage Hawkman

According to Rob Liefleld’s twitter the #0 issues will be his last work for DC. It seems it comes down to last minute rewrites from editors that changed the story(s) significantly. Newsarama has compiled a bunch of the tweets. This means he will be off The Savage Hawkman, Grifter, and Deathstroke. I wonder how this will change the “Hawkman: Wanted” crossover

Preview: The Savage Hawkman #12

Comic Vine has a preview of The Savage Hawkman #12

Here is the trailer for the Robot Chicken DC Comics Special. Though the preview mostly highlights Justice League and Legion of Doom characters,it looks like the special will jump all over the DC Universe. Solomon Grundy, Hawkman, Red Tornado, and Icicle are Earth 2 related characters that show up in the preview. I expect there will be more.

Robot Chicken DC Comics Special Sunday, Sept. 9 at midnight ET/PT on Adult Swim.

Rob Liefeld shared a spread from next week’s The Savage Hawkman #12 on his Facebook page by by Joe Bennett and Art Thibert and colors by Guy Major.

Rob Liefeld spoke with CBR about Hawkman, Deathstroke, and Grifter. Here is what he had to say about the Hawkwoman like character on the cover of issue #12.

So we’ve got a woman who’s been breaking through to Hawkman’s Nth Metal armor via some kind of distress signal, and then we’ve got a very Hawkwoman-looking character on the cover to issue #12. How are these two connected?
Hawkman has indeed been receiving messages within his Nth metal, since early in my first issue. We had to pay that off eventually, right? Issue #12 sets the table for months to come with #0 and the aftermath that leads to “Wanted.”
The “Hawkman” #0 issue seems to be a chance for you to ties the origin special concept directly into the endgame you seem to be heading towards with Thanagar. Since so many fans know the something about how that planet has worked in the past, how are you trying to make it different in the New 52?
I have a completely different approach to Thanagar and Hawkman’s origin. It’s a very different path for Katar Hol than any that have been traveled before. Hopefully long time fans as well as new readers will enjoy this direction. We had a lot to fit into 20 pages — conspiracies, drama, action, monsters — it’s really big.

During “DC Comics: The New 52” panel at CCI topics of Earth 2, Hawkman, Shazam, and Darkseid were coverd. Here are a bunch of quotes from The Source, CBR, and Newsarama.
Newsarama covered a question asked about Earth 2.

Q: Back in the day with the original crisis the goal was to consolidate the DCU, by reopening Earth 2 are you worried you’ve recreated that situation
Johns: “Well it took them 25 years to create confusion, so we’re all right for now.” laughs from the crowd “No, I’m serious.”
He said he loves what Robinson is doing with the book and he’s “introducing the characters with such care”

On how Hawkman will be interacting with the rest of the DCU:
The Source

Savage Hawkman #0 is the culmination of the story that’s been told so far as Hawkman finds out the truth of why he has the Nth Metal and has to deal with the consequences of that news.

CBR:

Rob Liefeld gave a brief overview of “The Savage Hawkman” #0, saying “when he finds out the whole truth at the end of 0 and through 13, he’s a wanted felon throughout the galaxy, where Green Arrow, Deathstroke and Red Hood and some of the heavy hitters in the DC Universe” come across Hawkman’s path.

Newsarama:

Savage Hawkman #0 is “the culmination of what we’ve been doing all spring and summer” says Liefeld
“At the end of 0 and into 13 he finds out his truth, which is something he has to deal with the consequences of. he’s a wanted felon in the Universe, and Deathstroke, Red Hood and the Outlaws, Green Lantern, and others will be after him”

Shazam:
The Source:

Cyborg and Shazam will be “buddies” when he joins the team, acting a little irresponsibly being the two youngest members of the team. It’s also interesting also since it’s a pairing of magic and technology.

CBR:

Geoff Johns joined the panel for his two zero issues, “Justice League” and “Aquaman.” “We’ll get new members like Shazam in the second year. The first year was about who the team is,” and the second year is about the team becoming who they should be. Johns also praised artist Gary Frank’s work on the issue and that “Shazam gets his powers in [‘Justice League’ #0] and joins the team next year.”
Johns also said Cyborg and Shazam will become good friends and may have a little fun with their powers, perhaps irresponsibly. “I want to create a friendship like Hal and Barry had and Ted and Booster had.”

Newsarama:

“I’ve been getting a lot of great feedback on Gary Frank and Shazam, we’re doing a slightly different take on Billy Batson, but the whole point is finding the good inside”
“The old Billy Batson is so perfect, and striving to be that way is the more interesting story. #0 shows him get his powers, and he’ll join the team next year”
“As for Cyborg being on, he represents communication and technology, he’s a human boom tube now. He’s caught in the digital age, he can’t unplug. He and Shazam are actually going to be buddies because of their age; they have a lot of fun together, let kids have some fun with their powers, maybe a little irresponsibly. I want to create a friendship like Hal and Barry had and Ted and Booster had, that mixture of Magic and Technology. Even though Shazam can’t high-five Cyborg because when he does the first time he short circuits his armor.”
Q: Do you think SHAZAM could get a solo book?Johns: “If you guys want a solo SHAZAM book, I’m sure it’ll happen.”

Darkseid:
CBR:

Johns confirmed that there’s only one Darkseid in the New 52. “It’s the same exact Darkseid [in ‘Earth 2’ as in ‘Justice League’]. There’s only one Darkseid.”

CBR covered DC Entertainment - All Access: DC NOW! panel at Comic-Con International. During that panel Geoff Johns spooke about Shazam and Black Adam

Moving onto “Justice League” issue #0, Johns promised that Shazam will be joining the team, “In their second year, and Black Adam is around as well,” Johns added.

Rob Liefeld talked a bit about Hawkman and his ties to Thanagar. This is following my train of thought that soon we will find out he is Thanagarian and his real name is Katar. Then that will free up the Carter Hall name for an Earth 2 Hawkman. Even in the reboot Hawkman is cursed to be confusing. ;)

Liefeld took over with “Savage Hawkman” issue #0, telling audiences that in his first few issues Carter Hall has been trying to figure out the nth metal while being attacked by those interested in taking it from him, issue #12 leading right into the #0 issue.
“It’s a giant space opera with the fall of Thanagar…we introduce Carter was an adopted son of the royal family,” Liefeld said, adding, “It sets the stage for ‘Hawkman: Wanted’…[where] Carter learns that when he is located on Earth he is an intergalactic criminal…he now has to prove his innocence.” The issues after that will cross over with “Green Arrow,” and include Red Hood, Starfire and Deathstroke.
“It’s a little bit of Dune, a little bit of Ten Commandments,” Liefeld added, describing the book and showing an image of Lady Hawk on the cover of issue #12.

CBR covered of the DC Comics: Tales from the Dark and the Edge panel at Comic-Con International. During that panel Rob Liefeld spoke about Hawkman.

Opening the floor to audience questions, the first fan to the microphone asked Liefeld what he wanted to bring new to “Savage Hawkman,” “Grifter,” and “Deathstroke.” Saying that DiDio called him up at 5AM to talk about the books, Liefeld said DiDio asked
“I want a sense of urgency in these books, can you give that to me?” Liefeld recalled. “When Jim Lee went to DC ten years ago I said, can you get me to do Deathstroke?” Liefeld added.
Liefeld then said he believed that Deathstroke was a greater influence on Cable than on Deadpool, saying that he enjoyed Grifter and that he had loved Hawkman since the “Justice Friends” television show.
“What we do in Hawkman #0 will set up a huge event that will make him wanted across the universe,” Liefeld said. The panelists then all teased the artist about a video he had uploaded that showed him inking his pages while driving on vacation.
“Don’t ink and drive!” Palmiotti joked as the audience laughed.
