Notes From Wednesday’s Books

Tawny!

I’m pretty sure in a couple months that will read, “Katar?”

So Dr. Occult is hanging around the main DCU? I was hoping he’d be used in Earth 2 by the Justice Society similar to how Phantom Stranger is used by the Justice League. I suppose he could be from Earth 2. There is no stopping him from jumping from one earth to another.

I missed Savage last week but well you know…. “Players only love you when they’re playing.”

Newsarama spoke with Rob Liefeld about The Savage Hawkman, the gorgeous art of Joe Bennett, and who the new Hawkwoman is. This is what he said about September’s issue #0:

Issue #0 is by far my favorite anything I’ve ever done. We went BIG and received approvals all down the line. #0 reveals Carter’s past to both him and the reader simultaneously. At the end of #0 Carter will know where he came from and why he is here. He might not know how exactly he got here but we have to leave some pieces to play with in future issues. But yes, many big revelations are made in #0. I’m not sure Hawkman comes out of issue #0 better than he went into it, it puts him in a really difficult spot, but it’s key in setting up what comes next, which is the next biggest thing he will experience.

With the introduction of Hawkwoman in Hawkman and Hawkgirl in Earth 2 I’m wondering if it will be revealed that Carter is actually Thanagarian. If the DCU will have counterparts on the main earth and Earth 2 I’m sure they will have to look different.
Go read the interview and check out The Savage Hawkman. I’m liking the new direction.

Notes From Wednesday’s Books

Hey is this the first appearance of the New 52 Hawkwoman/Hawkgirl? She’s seen in a vision/communication. The Savage Hawkman #9 is the start of the new creative team, Rob Liefeld and Joe Bennett. Joe Bennett doe a great job on the interiors. Rob Liefeld definitely injects some well needed life into this title. The story is pretty good despite the heavy handed bird references throughout the interior monologue. I’d check it out.

Justice League Dark also is the start of a new creative team. I checked it out because I really like the new series writer, Jeff Lemire’s work. It was a great read, with nice art from Mikel Janin plus we find out another Golden Age hero was active in this New 52 Continuity, Zatara. I’d love to see a team-up between Zatara, Vigilante, Frankenstein, Lennox, Madam Fatal, and Shade set in World War II. They’d make a motley crew — a magician, a cowboy, a monster, a demigod, a cross-dresser, and a human shadow.

Complex has a preview of The Savage Hawkman #9. Joe Bennett does a good job of making this Hawkman costume look better. It still has that “Total Justice Fractal Armor” feel.

Rob Liefeld Talks Hawkman on Word Balloon

Rob Liefeld talked with John Siuntres on the latest episode of Word Balloon. It is a long in-depth look at what Rob is working on at DC including The Savage Hawkman, Grifter, and DeathstrokeCheck it out!

Savage Hawkman Character Sketches

Bleeding Cool has posted Joe Bennett’s sketches of how he will be handling Hawkman’s look.

Notes From Wednesday’s Books

In The Flash #6 with art and story by Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato, Iris, Barry (The Flash), and Patty sit down to eat at a restaurant called Captain Jay’s. I’m guessing this is a nod to Jay Garrick the original Flash. WIth the new Earth Two book on the horizon it made me wonder if the first official meeting between Earth 2 and the main DC Universe will be in a Flash Book. The Flashes first met in The Flash (vol. 1) #123. And by the way if you are not reading The Flash you are missing out on one of the best super-hero books on the market.

In The Savage Hawkman #6 written by Tony S. Daniel and drawn by Philip Tan, Hawkman ends up on Long Island. There are no mountains on Long Island. With DC being headquartered in Manhattan I would have thought that an editor would have caught that this looks nothing like Long Island. If the creative team is not going to embrace the “real world” setting they put Hawkman in, why move him out of St. Roch? If the location read, “Outskirts of St. Roch” it would have not taken me out of the story.

Joe Bennett’s Hawkman Pencils

Editor Rachel Gluckstern posted two pages of art from The Savage Hawkman #9 by Joe Bennett on The Source. It’s nice to see Bennett back on Hawkman. This isn’t his first go round with the character. He drew Hawkman during Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray run on the title. This is what Rachel Gluckstern had to say about the upcoming creative changes on the book:

Thanks to the dynamic storytelling of Rob Liefeld and the art team of Joe Bennett and Art Thibert, THE SAVAGE HAWKMAN is ready to take flight and deliver the finest in globetrotting, gladiatorial action!  What is the mystery behind the Nth Metal embedded in Hawkman’s body, and who is tracking it down?  It all begins in THE SAVAGE HAWKMAN #9 and it won’t stop. It
can’t stop.  This is the era of Hawkman the Warrior – unleashed!

I’m interested in the new creative changes. I haven’t read anything by Rob Liefeld so I am willing to give it a chance. I may have but I was probably too young to remember. I’m definitely excited for the art change. I like the way Joe Benett draws Hawkman’s chest straps. I’m still not a fan of the new helmet. I think the chin straps take away from the sharp jowls that shot down the side of his face. I don’t think any artist will be able to change that.

The Savage Hawkman #9 in will be in stores on May 23, 2012.
